about
the cd
Siúcra's
freshman effort started out as a demo in October of 1999. "Things
went well and we just kept getting more and more done," said Beth
Leachman in an interview with Lori Cumpston in March of 2000. "By
the end of a two-day recording session, we had done a whole CD."
Recorded at Boulder's Akashic
Studios, perhaps the trio should have kept going. They were rebuked
in Irish Music (May 2000) for their "meagre" offering of eleven
tracks and asked for more original music. (An Irish back-handed compliment,
if there ever was one.)
The reviewer is not alone
in praise for a place i know. Phrases like "at home in the
collection of anyone who appreciates startling musicianship," "Siúcra
can deliver the goods," and "their talent is anything but ordinary"
have been commonplace. Siúcra's
pure musicianship and modern sensibilities, based on a firm foundation
of the power of the tune and tradition, are finding new fans with every
spin of the disc and at every show.
Beth Leachman's warm and expert
phrasing joins the facile flute and whistles of Shannon Heaton, ably supported
(and sometimes driven) by Matthew Heaton's masterful guitar work. (They
are joined on two tracks by guest artist Ty Burhoe on the tabla.) a
place i know presents new powerfully paired with old, and lovers of
the tradition can only rejoice.
This young and extraordinarily
talented trio have realized their goal for their first effort -- a
place i know is an accurate representation of what Siúcra
sounds like live: "(It's) the entertaining and high energy live show
which is building Siúcra's
reputation. Expect driving adventurous arrangements of traditional and
original reels, jigs and songs -- all delivered with Siúcra's
charismatic flair."
